Do you have Wild Proso Millet on your farm?

Late summer is a good time to identify grassy weeds because they often have seed heads. Wild proso millet is present in NY and can be a problem weed in sweet corn and other vegetable crops. Click on the links to the figures below to see what this weed looks like in August. Wild proso millet is a large tufted annual grass with erect stems branching from the base View image.
It may grow up to 2 m tall, and is often nearly as tall as sweet corn View image.
The seed head is a panicle that is either open or broom-like and often droops; note also the hairy leaf sheaths below the seed head View image. The seeds or grains are egg-shaped and about 3 mm long and 2 mm wide View image. When mature, the seed color varies from light cream to brownish-black. If you have questions on the identification or control of this weed on your farm, please contact Julie Kikkert jrk2@cornell.edu or 585-394-3977 x 404.

On Monday, June 16th, severe storms hit many sections of New York with wind and hail. Significant damage has been reported. In order to secure federal or state assistance, it is essential that crop damage be reported both to your crop insurance adjuster and to your local FSA office. Report all crop damage to your local FSA office immediately to make sure that the damage is included in the report FSA compiles to evaluate a disaster declaration. Contact NYFB with questions: 518-436-8495, 800-342-4143, www.nyfb.org.

Take pictures! (Maire Ullrich, CCE, Orange Co.) - No less important than reporting crop damage, growers need to take pictures of damage ASAP and report even the smallest damage to FSA and insurance. Accurate, timely damage assessments can only be taken now. Yield/grade might be down and growers will need back-up documentation for insurance and/or NAP payments. If you don’t have a camera contact someone who does! (If you don’t have access to a camera, contact one of the Cornell Vegetable Program Staff for assistance.)

Eggplant Variety Trial
Asian and gourmet varieties of eggplants can provide a decent profit for fresh market growers. Knowing your product and knowing your market will improve the sales of this item. Ethnic groups and people who are looking for more diversity when cooking will be especially interested in many of these varieties.
When going into Asian and gourmet eggplant production, it is best to start small with a couple of varieties or have several varieties but not a lot of plants of each. Test your market. See what is the best way to market your produce. Sell larger eggplants by the pound while the smaller ones (ones of different color) might sell better mixed in quart baskets. Taste them for your self using various recipes. Provide recipes for your customers. Learn when the fruit are at the right stage for picking - before they get seedy. This can be different as the season progresses. Smaller fruit or :baby" fruit might sell better than 2-3lb fruit. Keep water available and constant across the season, though during heavy fruit load in the heat, extra water will be necessary. Protecting against insects is especially important from transplanting to flowering. Get good leaf canopy going and watch for colorado potato beetle, flea beetle, and spider mites.
