2020 (Virtual) Greenhouse IPM In-Depth Workshop

Event Details

Date

July 28, 2020

Time

1:00pm - 3:00pm

Location

Webinar

Host

NYS Integrated Pest Management Program

Since we can't gather on the Cornell campus this year, we're taking your favorite IPM workshop virtual!

Program

Tune Up your Fertilizer Injector

Neil Mattson - Associate Professor, Horticulture Section

Your fertilizer injector/proportioner is your lifeline to your crop's nutritional health. But, beyond fertilizer applications, injectors can be used to apply many labeled pesticides, PGRs, and disinfectants (i.e. chemigation). We'll learn two quick methods to check that your injector is dosing properly. We'll discuss common issues to troubleshoot your injector issues, including flow rates and degraded seals. And we'll discuss best management practices for using your injector for chemigation.

Bug Matinee: Bad guys and good guys on the big screen!

John Sanderson, Associate Professor, Department of Entomology

Because we can't be together to watch bugs in action under a microscope, in this session you'll see close-up videos of your least-favorite pests and how they live their lives - and damage your plants!  We'll talk about what we're seeing and how it helps to manage these pests. But we'll also watch some good guys - biocontrol insects and mites -  and talk about how they live and hunt and attack their prey, and how this knowledge can lead to biocontrol success! (Warning- this movie is unrated for violence!)

Getting to the Root of the Problem: Exploring greenhouse root diseases

Brian Eshenaur, Sr. Extension Associate for Ornamental Crops, NYSIPM Program and Margery Daughtrey, Senior Extension Associate, Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology Section

In this session we'll take a look at the most common root diseases we see in the greenhouse.  There will be a focus on the conditions that allow these diseases to develop and the early symptoms.  We'll demonstrate how to detect root problems and discuss management strategies.

How to apply for DEC credits

If you wish to receive NYS DEC or MA or CT pesticide recertification credits, you must pre-register and, PRIOR to the In-depth, send a legible photo of your applicator's license by email to eml38@cornell.edu  (we have found that photocopies don't work well.  Pictures taken with a smart device work better!) Additional information on how the process will work to receive credits will be sent to you before the In-depth.

Zoom

This program will be presented on the Zoom video conferencing platform.  Once you register, the Zoom link will be sent to you. You will need a computer or a smart device to view the video.  You can use your computer audio or call in separately via phone for the audio portion.  We will be using pop up polls to make the program interactive and as part of the process for awarding DEC credits.  More information on using Zoom for this program will be sent to all registered participants.

Accessibility

We are dedicated to making this program accessible to all audiences.  If you have specific requirements for being able to participate, please contact Betsy Lamb at eml38@cornell.edu or 607 342-8983 and we will make accommodations.
