Niagara County Vegetable and Small Fruit Grower Meeting
The morning vegetable program will include presentations on research updates on sweet corn bird and weed management; the final ruling of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) - what it means for your farm; new developments for managing insect pests and diseases in Cole crops; and living much. Fresh market vegetable research priorities and needs will be discussed and the Western NY Food Hub.

The afternoon berry program will include presentations by Cornell faculty - Kerik Cox, Greg Loeb, Marvin Pritts, and Courtney Weber. The talks will include time for questions and will address current issues in strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries.

Cornell Vegetable Program Specialists will educate growers on disease and pest management, varieties and marketing issues in open field and high tunnel vegetables. Topics include bird control in sweet corn, vine crop pest management, a cover crop and crop rotation discussion, high tunnel tomato disease management, the Food Safety Modernization act and the impact on auction growers, and swede midge management. Disease resistant varieties, cultural management and appropriate spray options will be discussed.

Join us for production updates on Western bean cutworm, white mold, varieties and bean breeding, and soil health. There will be a marketing update from Tim McGreevy, CEO, American Pulse Association, Moscow, ID, on: 2016 - International Year of Pulses: Why they are the Future of Food (dry beans/peas, lentils, chickpeas are pulses).

In addition, final results of Robin Bellinder's reduced tillage dry bean weed control trials, and trials of potential new dry bean herbicides, will be reported. Food safety practices and documentation required by buyers will be covered. There will also be a report from the Organic Dry Bean Discussion Group.

Special Permit training program has been revised to address issues raised by the DEC. Note: special permits (SP) will only be issued for 11 specific pesticide labels and SP trainees will have to pass a test. This will relieve the certified pesticide applicator from "on-site within voice contact" supervision of non-certified pesticide applicators when they are handling federally-restricted-use pesticides for which they hold a Special Permit. The labels that will be covered by this Special Permit include Lorsban Advanced, Endigo ZC, Warrior II with Zeon Technology, Agri-Mek SC, Voliam Xpress, Gramoxone SL 2.0, Leverage 360, Danitol 2.4EC, Mustang Maxx, Asana XL, and Lannate LV.

Workers requiring general pesticide training who do not need special permits will not be tested, but will still receive a course participation certificate and Agricultural Worker Protection Standard Handler card.

Understanding and Managing Soils for Top Vegetable Production

Understanding and Managing Soils for Top Vegetable Production
Soil is made up of minerals, live and dead organic materials, and pore space (for air and water). The proportions and interactions of these parts determine whether a soil is healthy, supporting top vegetable production, or is in poor health, resulting in crop stress and increased soil-borne disease.

This workshop will cover the biology, physical condition, and chemistry of a healthy, productive soil. The Cornell Soil Health Test will be described, and examples of test results for area farms will be shown. Ways to improve the health and productivity of your soil will be discussed. How to sample soil for accurate nutrient analysis will be demonstrated. The Cornell pH Test Kit (do-it-yourself) will be shown, and participants will have the opportunity to test their own soils. Be sure to bring a soil sample! Part of this workshop will be in the field or high tunnel.

Alternative Grapevine Propagation Study - Field Meeting 1

Richard Lamoy owner of Hid-In-Pines Vineyard, has been awarded a Northeast SARE (Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education) grant to study and evaluate a more efficient and economical way to propagate and transplant grape vines for vineyard expansion. This project will evaluate a method of propagating vines from smaller cuttings into cell plug trays and planted with a transplanter.

This will be the first of two planned field meetings related to the project.
