Vegetable Disease Management - In Field Management Scenarios

Expect an update on diseases currently affecting vegetable crops in WNY along with hands-on demonstrations on identifying pests and scouting. Dr. Christine Smart, Cornell Plant Pathologist, will provide disease management information for both conventional and organic growers. Cornell Vegetable Program Specialists Robert Hadad and Darcy Telenko will lead field tours and facilitate discussions among participants.

Vegetable Pest and Cultural Management Field Meeting - Allegany County

This course will demonstrate pest management in fresh market vegetables in both field and greenhouse (high tunnel) vegetables; primarily for those growing for wholesale auction. A hands-on demonstration of weed, insect and disease identification in vegetables including management options such as inter-row cover crops, grafting and where appropriate, spray options will be used to educate growers. Judson Reid, Senior Extension Associate with the Cornell Vegetable Program will instruct participants and facilitate peer-based learning.

Open House for Spotted Wing Drosophila Netting Exclusion and Fixed Spray System Farm Trials

Spotted Wing Drosophila research continues in our ongoing effort to better understand and control this new pest. This meeting will focus on a SARE Farmer grant funded project looking at different grades of exclusion netting and its efficacy on eliminating SWD from blueberries.
We will also look at a high tunnel raspberry planting that has a NYFVI funded grant project examining the efficacy and labor saving attributes of a fixed spray system in the tunnel.
Owner Dale Ila Riggs has been a leader in the campaign to secure research funding for SWD. The Berry Patch at Stonewall Hill Farm produces all kinds of berries and vegetables for local retail markets.
We will also look at a high tunnel raspberry planting that has a NYFVI funded grant project examining the efficacy and labor saving attributes of a fixed spray system in the tunnel.

At this grower-focused meeting, ag industry experts will discuss pest control in vegetables, weed management strategies and best practices, seed germination, an introduction to foliar nutrient uptake in vegetables, and grouping flowers by growth needs. Plus we'll hear from a grower panel from Kutztown Produce Auction, moderated with NYS specific pest control from Judson Reid.
2.25 DEC recertification credits will be offered in categories 10, 1a, 23, and 24.
Intro to Food Safety and GAPs Training
