2018 WNY Fresh Market Vegetable Twilight Meeting

An early season fresh market vegetable discussion of issues and to present information on pest management tools. Marion Zuefle, NYS IPM, will review and demonstrate how to scout for sweet corn pests and identify major sweet corn insect pests. John Wallace, Cornell, and Bryan Brown, NYS IPM, will discuss major weed biology, identification, and weed management tools in vegetables. The Cornell Vegetable Program's Darcy Telenko will lead a crop walk and talk about early season pest monitoring and management options. And Robert Hadad, Cornell Vegetable Program, will provide an update on FSMA ad implications for the 2018 season.
2018 Annual Elba Muck Onion Twilight Meeting Featuring Herbicide Trial Tours

This in-field twilight meeting will feature a tour of Christy Hoepting's fungicide trial for Stemphylium leaf blight and Botrytis leaf blight. Hoepting will share head to head comparisons of FRAC groups, alternatives to FRAC 3 and 7, reduced rates, and fungicide programs. A first look at 2018 results from onion thrips research trials will be presented by Brian Nault and Ashley Leach, Cornell University. Hear about the 2018 onion maggot research trial results and new research initiative with Brian Nault and Erica Moretti. Hoepting will also provide information about a new seed treatment for onion smut control.

Research trial results, cultural technique showcases, and effective varieties and treatments for organic and IPM production are the meeting focus. We will highlight current disease issues, their detection & spread based on this season's climate conditions, and management tools available to reduce yield impacts. Sessions will also be offered on pest identification and control options. Regional equipment dealers and industry representatives will be invited to display equipment and new technology.

Greater WNY Veg Farming Collaborative Teach-In: In-Row Cultivation Demo

Controlling in-row weeds with cultivation is very challenging. Newer in-row cultivators allow for use of finger weeders, torsion weeders, disk hillers, and harrows to be guided along the row. These tools will be on hand for participants to set up and use in beets. The results of a trial comparing the effect of these tools used on different size beets will also be demonstrated by Bryan Brown, PhD., Integrated Weed Management Specialist, NYS IPM Program.

At this grower-focused meeting, ag industry experts will discuss pest control in vegetables, weed management strategies and best practices, seed germination, an introduction to foliar nutrient uptake in vegetables, and grouping flowers by growth needs. Plus we'll hear from a grower panel from Kutztown Produce Auction, moderated with NYS specific pest control from Judson Reid.

Intro to Food Safety and GAPs Training

This virtual workshop will serve two purposes:
- For produce farms just interested in learning about farm food safety, this program will introduce principles and best practices.
- For produce farms look for a GAPs (Good Agricultural Practices) training needed to meet buyer demands for audit/certification, this program will provide that as well.
