Growing, Washing and Packing High Tunnel Winter Greens: Doing It and Doing It Well

This event promises to help growers bring their winter greens production to the next level -- both in the high tunnel and in the packshed. There will be an emphasis on best management practices in the high tunnel, especially practices which support long term soil health and fertility. In the packshed, processing efficiency and food safety will both be stressed.
The day will begin at 9:00 am in conference room Broadway 1, with workshops on issues and opportunities in winter high tunnel production and best practices for postharvest handling, including food safety concerns.
Upon completion of the workshops at 10:30 am, everyone will board a bus and travel to Paul and Sandy Arnold's Pleasant Valley Farm in Argyle, NY for a farm tour and farmer-led discussions in the high tunnel and packshed. A farm to table lunch, with a vegetarian option, will be served at the farm. After lunch, the tours and discussions will continue and then everyone will come together for a Q&A session with hot cider and light snacks. The bus will leave the farm at about 3:15 pm and should be back at the hotel by 4:00 pm.

Adding weeks to either end of your growing season can mean attaining a premium for having products available well before (or long after) other local growers. But the structures that make this possible --(unheated plastic-covered "high tunnels" or "hoop houses") can cost a lot of money, and they bring special management considerations that need to be understood in order to be profitable additions to your farm.
Offered as an online course through the Cornell Small Farms Program, this course (BF220) is meant for farmers who already have some experience successfully growing vegetables outdoors and are exploring high tunnels as a way to expand the season or improve plant quality. Information will be focused on using high tunnels in colder climates (US Climate Zones 4-6), but can be adapted to other growing regions.

The labels that will be covered include Lorsban Advanced, Endigo ZC, Warrior II with Zeon Technology, Agri-Mek SC, Beseige, Gramoxone SL 2.0, Leverage 360, Danitol 2.4EC, Mustang Maxx, Asana XL, and Lannate LV.

The Cornell Vegetable Program's Darcy Telenko will lead a crop walk and talk about early season pest monitoring and management options. This in-field twilight meeting will feature a tour of Christy Hoepting's fungicide trial for Stemphylium leaf blight and Botrytis leaf blight. Hoepting will share head to head comparisons of FRAC groups, alternatives to FRAC 3 and 7, reduced rates, and fungicide programs. A first look at 2018 results from onion thrips research trials will be presented by Brian Nault and Ashley Leach, Cornell University. Hear about the 2018 onion maggot research trial results and new research initiative with Brian Nault and Erica Moretti. Hoepting will also provide information about a new seed treatment for onion smut control.

Greater WNY Veg Farming Collaborative Teach-In: In-Row Cultivation Demo

Controlling in-row weeds with cultivation is very challenging. Newer in-row cultivators allow for use of finger weeders, torsion weeders, disk hillers, and harrows to be guided along the row. These tools will be on hand for participants to set up and use in beets. The results of a trial comparing the effect of these tools used on different size beets will also be demonstrated by Bryan Brown, PhD., Integrated Weed Management Specialist, NYS IPM Program.
