Fresh Market cole crop production has gotten tougher over the last few years. Revised Program Accommodates Social Distancing Guidelines

Special Permit Training (SPT) for 2020 has been revised to an online format that accommodates current restrictions on public meetings, recommendations for social distancing, and projected delays in H2A guest worker processing imposed by COVID-19. 

In time for the originally proposed in-person SP Trainings on April 7 and 8, we hope to have available pre-recorded training modules. It will be the responsibility of the Supervisor/Certified Pesticide Applicator(s) on each farm to administer the training modules and written exam to their Special Permit trainees. Once registered, all of the necessary training materials and documents associated with Special Permit applications will be sent separately to each farm along with a private link to access the training modules.

Special Permits will only be issued for 10 specific pesticide labels. This will relieve the certified pesticide applicator from "on-site within voice contact" supervision of non-certified pesticide applicators when they are handling federally-restricted-use pesticides for which they hold a Special Permit. The labels that will be covered include Lorsban Advanced (for control of black stem borer in apple only), Endigo ZC, Warrior II with Zeon Technology, Agri-Mek SC, Beseige, Leverage 360, Danitol 2.4EC, Mustang Maxx, Asana XL, and Lannate LV (no Gramoxone this year.)

Following much consideration, the New York State Vegetable Growers Association and Cornell Cooperative Extension announced the annual Becker Forum and Empire State Producers Expo will be a virtual conference scheduled for January 11-15, 2021.

Farmers and anyone interested in learning more about precision agriculture and how it can be implemented on the farm is invited to attend a 3-part virtual series. The series will feature Dr. Ali Nafchi, Precision Agriculture Specialist with CCE's NWNY Dairy, Livestock and Field Crops Team and the Cornell Vegetable Program. Topics will begin with an introduction to precision agriculture and why any producer of an agricultural product should be interested in precision agriculture. 

Join Cornell Cooperative Extension on January 27th for a remote GAPs training. Instructors will walk growers through how to conduct a risk assessment on their farm utilizing the seven areas of farm food safety. Participants will gain hands-on experience in creating a traceability system for their farm, as well as learn about packing house design with food safety principles guiding placement of equipment and suggested materials. Students will also learn about how to train their employees related to food safety and understand what they will need to implement on their farm in order to pass a third-party food safety audit, such as GAPs. 

On January 28th growers can join us for a day focused on writing their farm food safety plan. Trainers will be joined by NYS Department of Agriculture & Markets Farm Products inspectors to give guidance and input for farms in creating their farm food safety plans to meet the needs for a potential audit. At the conclusion of day two growers will have all components of their farm food safety plans outlined with the most critical pieces.

Students will also learn about how to train their employees related to food safety and understand what they will need to implement on their farm in order to pass a third-party food safety audit, such as GAPs. 

On January 28th growers can join us for a day focused on writing their farm food safety plan. Trainers will be joined by NYS Department of Agriculture & Markets Farm Products inspectors to give guidance and input for farms in creating their farm food safety plans to meet the needs for a potential audit. At the conclusion of day two growers will have all components of their farm food safety plans outlined with the most critical pieces.

To meet the year-round demand for locally produced food, vegetable farmers have embraced protected agriculture to extend their growing season, improve yields, and enhance crop quality. However, a statewide survey found that after several growing seasons, farmers struggle to maintain productivity due to challenges in long term soil health and fertility management. Cornell Cooperative Extension is exploring practices that high tunnel growers can adopt to better manage soil fertility and improve soil health.

Fresh Market cole crop production has gotten tougher over the last few years. In addition to scouting, ID and management of common pests, diseases, and weeds, the morning includes special seminars on controlling swede midge, alternaria, and on winter high tunnel production strategies. This school is designed for organic and conventional fresh market growers who consider themselves beginner or intermediate skill-level cole crops producers.

Revised Program Accommodates Social Distancing Guidelines

Special Permit Training (SPT) for 2020 has been revised to an online format that accommodates current restrictions on public meetings, recommendations for social distancing, and projected delays in H2A guest worker processing imposed by COVID-19. 

In time for the originally proposed in-person SP Trainings on April 7 and 8, we hope to have available pre-recorded training modules. It will be the responsibility of the Supervisor/Certified Pesticide Applicator(s) on each farm to administer the training modules and written exam to their Special Permit trainees. Once registered, all of the necessary training materials and documents associated with Special Permit applications will be sent separately to each farm along with a private link to access the training modules.

Special Permits will only be issued for 10 specific pesticide labels. This will relieve the certified pesticide applicator from "on-site within voice contact" supervision of non-certified pesticide applicators when they are handling federally-restricted-use pesticides for which they hold a Special Permit. The labels that will be covered include Lorsban Advanced (for control of black stem borer in apple only), Endigo ZC, Warrior II with Zeon Technology, Agri-Mek SC, Beseige, Leverage 360, Danitol 2.4EC, Mustang Maxx, Asana XL, and Lannate LV (no Gramoxone this year.)

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Erie County (CCE Erie) is hosting an online workshop for anyone looking for a place to start an urban farm or market garden in the City of Buffalo. Selecting a suitable property is critical to the success of an urban farm. Size, soils, site history, infrastructure, neighborhood, and zoning are all factors that need to be considered. The Cornell Vegetable Program is receiving many requests for a summer meeting schedule. Traditionally these meetings are held on a cooperating farm and feature peer learning, crop demonstrations and insights from Cornell specialists, often with pesticide license re-certification credits. They are great opportunities to hear research updates and learn from other farmers. They go by many names: Twilight, Field Walk, Coffee Pots, Muck Donut…We look forward to them as much as you do.

Due to COVID-19 pandemic guidance from NYS Department of Ag & Markets, NYS Department of Health, and Cornell University, we do not have dates for meetings right now. But keep reading, as we are working towards hosting meetings by the end of the growing season.

Fresh Market cole crop production has gotten tougher over the last few years. In addition to scouting, ID and management of common pests, diseases, and weeds, the morning includes special seminars on controlling swede midge, alternaria, and on winter high tunnel production strategies. This school is designed for organic and conventional fresh market growers who consider themselves beginner or intermediate skill-level cole crops producers.

Revised Program Accommodates Social Distancing Guidelines

Special Permit Training (SPT) for 2020 has been revised to an online format that accommodates current restrictions on public meetings, recommendations for social distancing, and projected delays in H2A guest worker processing imposed by COVID-19. 

In time for the originally proposed in-person SP Trainings on April 7 and 8, we hope to have available pre-recorded training modules. It will be the responsibility of the Supervisor/Certified Pesticide Applicator(s) on each farm to administer the training modules and written exam to their Special Permit trainees. Once registered, all of the necessary training materials and documents associated with Special Permit applications will be sent separately to each farm along with a private link to access the training modules.

Special Permits will only be issued for 10 specific pesticide labels. This will relieve the certified pesticide applicator from "on-site within voice contact" supervision of non-certified pesticide applicators when they are handling federally-restricted-use pesticides for which they hold a Special Permit. The labels that will be covered include Lorsban Advanced (for control of black stem borer in apple only), Endigo ZC, Warrior II with Zeon Technology, Agri-Mek SC, Beseige, Leverage 360, Danitol 2.4EC, Mustang Maxx, Asana XL, and Lannate LV (no Gramoxone this year.)

Size, soils, site history, infrastructure, neighborhood, and zoning are all factors that need to be considered. The Cornell Vegetable Program is receiving many requests for a summer meeting schedule. Traditionally these meetings are held on a cooperating farm and feature peer learning, crop demonstrations and insights from Cornell specialists, often with pesticide license re-certification credits. They are great opportunities to hear research updates and learn from other farmers. They go by many names: Twilight, Field Walk, Coffee Pots, Muck Donut…We look forward to them as much as you do.

Due to COVID-19 pandemic guidance from NYS Department of Ag & Markets, NYS Department of Health, and Cornell University, we do not have dates for meetings right now. But keep reading, as we are working towards hosting meetings by the end of the growing season. 

This in-person event, hosted by CCE Wayne County, will cover the fresh market potato variety trial and potato disease forecasting. The onion portion of the program will include 1) post-emergent weed control of big weeds in little onions; 2) Fresh research results of 2020 fungicide trial evaluation for Botrytis leaf blight; and; 3) Fresh research results of 2020 "hammer" insecticide onion thrips trial. 2.0 DEC recertification credits will be available for those who attend the full meeting.

The meeting will take place in the gravel lot outside the warehouse, and we will not be walking the field trials in order to make sure we are following Cornell guidelines on safe social distancing.

Following much consideration, the New York State Vegetable Growers Association and Cornell Cooperative Extension announced the annual Becker Forum and Empire State Producers Expo will be a virtual conference scheduled for January 11-15, 2021.

Farmers and anyone interested in learning more about precision agriculture and how it can be implemented on the farm is invited to attend a 3-part virtual series. The series will feature Dr. Ali Nafchi, Precision Agriculture Specialist with CCE's NWNY Dairy, Livestock and Field Crops Team and the Cornell Vegetable Program. Topics will begin with an introduction to precision agriculture and why any producer of an agricultural product should be interested in precision agriculture. 

Join Cornell Cooperative Extension on January 27th for a remote GAPs training. Instructors will walk growers through how to conduct a risk assessment on their farm utilizing the seven areas of farm food safety. Participants will gain hands-on experience in creating a traceability system for their farm, as well as learn about packing house design with food safety principles guiding placement of equipment and suggested materials. Students will also learn about how to train their employees related to food safety and understand what they will need to implement on their farm in order to pass a third-party food safety audit, such as GAPs. 

On January 28th growers can join us for a day focused on writing their farm food safety plan. Trainers will be joined by NYS Department of Agriculture & Markets Farm Products inspectors to give guidance and input for farms in creating their farm food safety plans to meet the needs for a potential audit. At the conclusion of day two growers will have all components of their farm food safety plans outlined with the most critical pieces.

To meet the year-round demand for locally produced food, vegetable farmers have embraced protected agriculture to extend their growing season, improve yields, and enhance crop quality. However, a statewide survey found that after several growing seasons, farmers struggle to maintain productivity due to challenges in long term soil health and fertility management. Cornell Cooperative Extension is exploring practices that high tunnel growers can adopt to better manage soil fertility and improve soil health.

Join Cornell Cooperative Extension on January 27th for a remote GAPs training. Instructors will walk growers through how to conduct a risk assessment on their farm utilizing the seven areas of farm food safety. Participants will gain hands-on experience in creating a traceability system for their farm, as well as learn about packing house design with food safety principles guiding placement of equipment and suggested materials. Students will also learn about how to train their employees related to food safety and understand what they will need to implement on their farm in order to pass a third-party food safety audit, such as GAPs. 

On January 28th growers can join us for a day focused on writing their farm food safety plan. Trainers will be joined by NYS Department of Agriculture & Markets Farm Products inspectors to give guidance and input for farms in creating their farm food safety plans to meet the needs for a potential audit. At the conclusion of day two growers will have all components of their farm food safety plans outlined with the most critical pieces.

To meet the year-round demand for locally produced food, vegetable farmers have embraced protected agriculture to extend their growing season, improve yields, and enhance crop quality. However, a statewide survey found that after several growing seasons, farmers struggle to maintain productivity due to challenges in long term soil health and fertility management. Cornell Cooperative Extension is exploring practices that high tunnel growers can adopt to better manage soil fertility and improve soil health.

This workshop highlights concrete repair, cleaning and sanitation techniques, water management, products and resources, as well as show and tell from experienced growers, and Chris Callahan from UVM's Extension Ag Engineering.

Experienced growers and facilitators dig into the fundamentals of managing produce wash water, including show and tell with lessons learned about wash water management, use and monitoring of sanitizers. All participants leave with a plan to improve/implement new practices.

Learn from experienced managers of loyal and reliable crews, the pros and cons of their current management systems, and how they came to be. For growers wanting to install or improve a greens bubbler/aerator. Get feedback from growers who built/improved their own systems. Fresh Market cole crop production has gotten tougher over the last few years. In addition to scouting, ID and management of common pests, diseases, and weeds, the morning includes special seminars on controlling swede midge, alternaria, and on winter high tunnel production strategies. This school is designed for organic and conventional fresh market growers who consider themselves beginner or intermediate skill-level cole crops producers.

Revised Program Accommodates Social Distancing Guidelines

Special Permit Training (SPT) for 2020 has been revised to an online format that accommodates current restrictions on public meetings, recommendations for social distancing, and projected delays in H2A guest worker processing imposed by COVID-19. 

In time for the originally proposed in-person SP Trainings on April 7 and 8, we hope to have available pre-recorded training modules. It will be the responsibility of the Supervisor/Certified Pesticide Applicator(s) on each farm to administer the training modules and written exam to their Special Permit trainees. Once registered, all of the necessary training materials and documents associated with Special Permit applications will be sent separately to each farm along with a private link to access the training modules.

Special Permits will only be issued for 10 specific pesticide labels. This will relieve the certified pesticide applicator from "on-site within voice contact" supervision of non-certified pesticide applicators when they are handling federally-restricted-use pesticides for which they hold a Special Permit. The labels that will be covered include Lorsban Advanced (for control of black stem borer in apple only), Endigo ZC, Warrior II with Zeon Technology, Agri-Mek SC, Beseige, Leverage 360, Danitol 2.4EC, Mustang Maxx, Asana XL, and Lannate LV (no Gramoxone this year.)

Join the us for the annual Dry Bean Meeting! There will be presentations covering the latest research in NY dry beans. Topic areas include market updates, white mold management, Western bean cutworm and soybean cyst nematode management, herbicide resistance management, dry bean variety testing, and incorporating NY dry beans into schools. This meeting is sponsored by Genesee Valley Bean Company, and Bayer CropScience.

This program will be focusing on putting farm food safety into daily production practices. Besides some classroom presentations, there will be demos and hands-on activities with produce wash equipment. Participants will learn the why and how behind designing, cleaning, sanitizing, and drying produce handling equipment and buildings. And much more! 

Weed control across the farm relevant for vegetables, fruit, and pasture/forage. Topics include weed ID of common and new species, why nightshades are so problematic, assessing impact of & control weeds in pasture, herbicide resistance, cultivator demo, and mid-season weed control options.  

DEC credits requested (approval pending): 2.5 credits in categories 1a (commercial plant ag), 1.25 credit in category 21 (field crops), 1.5 credit in category 22 (fruit) and 2.0 credits in category 23 (vegetable).

Integrated weed management field day covering weed control in vegetables, small grains, and fruit. Topics include weed ID, new tool designs, getting better cultivation results, recognizing and managing herbicide resistance, group discussion on weed control strategies, and demonstrations.

It's going to be a Weed Control Extravaganza at this year's Oswego County Onion Growers Twilight Meeting! Bring weed samples for identification. 2.25 DEC recertification credits will be available (categories 1A, 10 and 23). CCA credits will also be available. This meeting is being organized by Oswego County Vegetable Growers and Improvement Association and CCE Cornell Vegetable Program.

This potato production meeting will cover organic and integrated management strategies. Topics include fertility, insect management, soil health, late blight prevention, and hand-on scouting skills practice. 1.0 DEC credit in 1a and 23.

Organic and integrated pest management strategies will be covered related to fresh market vegetable crop production. Topics include sweet corn scouting and laser scarecrow update, alternatives to Lorsban for cabbage maggot control, foliar sampling for improved fertility management, best practices for biopesticide use, and gauging soil biological activity. 1.25 DEC credit in 1a and 23.

This course will demonstrate pest management in fresh market vegetables in both field and greenhouse (high tunnel) vegetables, primarily for those growing for wholesale auction. A hands-on demonstration of weed, insect and disease identification in vegetables including management options such as inter-row cover crops, grafting and where appropriate, spray options will be used to educate growers. Judson Reid, Senior Extension Associate with the Cornell Vegetable Program along with CCE staff will instruct participants and facilitate peer-based learning. Details on each topic will focus on field observations at the farm.

Chris Smart, Cornell's Plant Pathologist, will be discussing control of bacterial diseases in tomato, Alternaria in brassicas, and other current/hot topics in disease. Weed Scientist Lynn Sosnoskie will introduce new pigweed species that are appearing in our region and give updates on herbicide resistance and new mechanical weed control techniques. Smaller topics include soil health. 

Join us for a fun, potato-centered twilight meeting at Mahany Farms! Come hear about updates from this year's chipping potato variety trial, and learn more about disease forecasting and management. Network with fellow growers, event speakers, and Cornell Cooperative Extension staff following the talks.

Experienced growers and UVM's Ag Engineering present new strategies and cleaning tools to increase the efficiency and efficacy of bin cleaning, sanitation and management practices. Lead growers show and tell their bin systems, with lessons learned. Participants leave with a plan to improve/implement new practices.

CCE Cornell Vegetable Program, NYS IPM, and Cornell Faculty will be attending this twilight meeting to share updates on Western bean cutworm trapping, white mold management, soybean cyst nematodes and field mapping, and pigweed identification and resistance screening. After the meeting, stick around to enjoy dinner and network with other dry bean growers and industry members.

Evaluate low-cost (either money or time) improvements that make a big difference. Experience growers show and tell the thrifty improvements they made and summarize lessons learned, including trade-offs of spending money (or not) to lower risks and increase efficiency. 

Learn to improve or repair a concrete floor so that it is smooth and easy to clean. This workshop highlights concrete repair, cleaning and sanitation techniques, water management, products and resources, as well as show and tell from experienced growers, and Chris Callahan from UVM's Extension Ag Engineering.

Experienced growers and facilitators dig into the fundamentals of managing produce wash water, including show and tell with lessons learned about wash water management, use and monitoring of sanitizers. All participants leave with a plan to improve/implement new practices.

Develop management strategies/systems to retain and empower high-value workers, while improving crew morale and culture. Learn from experienced managers of loyal and reliable crews, the pros and cons of their current management systems, and how they came to be. Participants leave with resources and a plan to improve/implement one or more new practices or strategies.

For growers wanting to install or improve a greens bubbler/aerator. Get feedback from growers who built/improved their own systems. Examine designs and DYI resources, as well as perceived quality and efficiency gains from bubblers as compared to other washing methods. This workshop features a panel of New York growers!
